The ANSI X12 EDI 820 transaction set is useful for making a payment, sending wire transfer instructions, or both. The transaction set can be used as an order to a financial institution to pay a payee. EDI 820 can also be a remittance recommendation to identify all the details needed to complete a cash application to the payee's accounts receivable system. Referral advice can be transmitted directly from the payer to the payee, or by a financial institution or third-party agent.
